What I would do for the people of New Zealand if I had 100 Million Dollars.
Turn New Zealand into a Tourist Paradise starting in Timaru. Travel overseas to market what I believe is the best scenic country in the World.
This was the headline I wrote in my publication Photo News in 1989.
Little did I know then that 18 years later I would be sitting in front of a computer and publishing Photo News from Timaru to an audience all around the world.
We say hello to America and Australia because at the moment you are our biggest audience. This article is to find out what you would like to see from Timaru New Zealand.
First go to our Timaru Directory website and see what is already there.

You will find a telephone directory with links to some businesses in Timaru and Geraldine. The business categories will guide you to things like accommodation which you will need when you come and visit our city. If you can’t find what you are looking for then please let me know and I will make it my business to find it for you. ron@timarudirectory.co.nz
The events menu has hundreds of interesting photos of what happens in the Timaru District.
Secrets
We also have many secrets in our part of the world which you may never get to see because the tour companies either don’t tell you or don’t know about them. On the slide show in the top right hand corner of the Timaru Directory you will see just some of our secrets.
Timaru claims ownership of world champion Boxer Bob Fitzimmons and world champion Athlete, Jack Lovelock and their statues are flashing on your screen. Timaru has some magnificent churches and the Catholic Basilica and Anglican St Marys you see in the photos are both worth a visit. Timaru is the closest City to New Zealands highest mountain Mount Cook and it is the only place in New Zealand where you can see snow covered mountains while paddling in the sea.
The old building behind the Piazza steps is called the Hydro Grand Hotel. It has been closed for some time and while many would like to see it restored and perhaps become a museum with its magnificent view to mountains and the sea the owners plan to pull it down to make way for apartments.
In Timaru we have lots of other secrets such as Phar Laps birth place and the birth place and home of famous pioneer aviator Richard Pearse.
Timaru has some of the best rural farmland in New Zealand with every kind of animal, fish, bird and crop you can imagine. We are about to put some of these farm animals onto this website with photos taken from the Temuka Sale Yards which are the biggest saleyards in the South Island.. We will start with some Cattle, Sheep, Pigs and Deer. You will also see the transport of these animals and the auctioneers in action.
We can also show you the work of our world famous taxidermists which do work on animals from all over the world and if you like art we claim ownership to some of best artists in the world
Take a look at the work of Gerldine artist Peter Caley
