Barry Jones of Timaru wrote a very good letter to the Timaru
Herald this week about our rubbish system.
During the last local body election campaign our local Mayor led
us to believe that Timaru people with their 3 wheely bins
had the best recycling system in New Zealand and that
we were the envy of many other towns.
We were also told by the Mayor that all decisions
made by the Timaru District Council during her term in office
had been unanimous.
Some may now be saying what a load of old rubbish.
It is obvious that our local councilors have never been to
Ashburton and observed what they do to recycle their rubbish.
The Ashburton Riverside Industrial Park in is built on top
of the old rubbish dump and businesses in the park bring
millions of dollars into their local economy every year.
In addition to local industry the park has a recycling
center where the locals bring their rubbish either to
be sold or recycled by the center. As well as a retail
shop the recycling center even has a classroom where
children are taught how to recycle their waste.
The whole operation is such a fascinating place they even
have tourists from around the world come to see how they do it.
The Ashburton District Council also has plans to build
another Industrial Park by the railway line north of their Cemetery.
Timaru has an old used rubbish tip alongside their cemetery and
this unused land next to the railway line would make a great
industrial park.
I’m afraid it will not happen in Timaru because this Council is more
interested in building luxury things that the majority of ratepayers
don’t want instead of building things that will bring revenue into
the district.
Moth balling one swimming pool and building another is wasting
more money on yet another white elephant.
All I can say is that if Timaru goes bankrupt and becomes a
ghost town it wont be the Mayor or the Councils fault it will be
the publics fault for believing their rubbish and letting them get away with it.
