The Mayor of Timaru Janie Annear is going to China to attend a world expo to lend support to the Communist party in China. The Timaru Mayor made this announcement in 2 articles of the Timaru Herald on Saturday 13th February 2010. One article was in the Timaru District Council Noticeboard and repeated again on the opinion page. In the article the Mayor gives her reasons for attending the Chinese Expo. It has been reported that there is up to 40 local Timarubusiness people going to China with the Mayor and their aim is to sell Timaru produce to the Chinese.
Conflict of Interest
Honey is one of the South Canterbury products being sold produced from beehives that are owned by the president of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce Mr Steve Lyttle. The Chamber of Commerce members are the main sponsors of the trade deal being set up in China. There has been no mention that any of Timaru’s main agriculture products such as meat wool fish or dairy products will be on display at the expo however what we do know is that Mr Lyttles honey will be in the ice cream on display and the wrapper will have the Timaru Mayors photo on it.
Expenditure approved
The cost of sending the Mayor and the General Manager the TimaruDistrict Council to communist China are both being sponsored by the ratepayers and taxpayers of the Timaru District and everyone seems to think it is a good idea. At one stage Councillor Kennedy was complaining that the expenditure was not approved by the full council but the Timaru mayor has since advised that all the Councilors are now in support of her trip including councillor Kennedy
Timaru Herald
The Timaru Herald have been keeping their readers well informed and no one has written any letters to the newspaper complaining. One would of thought someone would write reminding us all that a local Governments job is to look after local community services not to go on honeymoon trips to China. The Editor of the Timaru daily newspaper Mr David King has done a very good job of protecting the Mayor from any criticism. At one stage there was a rumour circulating around Timaru that the Mayor had been caught drunk in charge of a motor vehicle but the Herald stopped thatrumour with a front page article and an editorial in support of the mayors charactor. No negative letters were published by the newspaper on the subject
What do you think?
Do you think the Mayor and General Manager of any local Council should travel to a Communist country and have their travel expenses paid for by the ratepayers or tax payers
Are you having problems in your town where your Mayor and the Councillors you elected to office are waisting ratepayers money and are not doing the job you elected them to do?
