At election time candidates make a lot of promises and as the saying goes talk is cheap. I am also one of those people that have made promises in the past that I have never been able to keep. This year I thought I would change that and walk my talk by inviting all the candidates to join me on a walk through the city while I explain to them what I would do to improve parts of the City if I were the Mayor. I have also invited them to bring along any suggestions that they themselves may have to improve the City. The Walk the Talk with candidates is scheduled to begin at the Century Pool in Anzac Square at 8 am on Tuesday 5th Oct. Those who want to can have a swim in Timaru’s 110 year old swimming pool before the council puts it into mothballs.
Rebuilding the slum areas
Parts of the City has become neglected and during our walk I will be making suggestions on how we can develop, rebuild, and decorate those areas that have been neglected. I have a vision on how I see Timaru progressing in the coming years and I want to share my ideas with those who will be governing Timaru in the next 3 years. The public opinion polls are not picking me to become the next Mayor of Timaru so I figured that if I share my vision with the candidates before the results are known then those who are elected may take more notice of any suggestions I may make in the public forum than has been the case in the past.
Life after Politics
I am planning to live to be 100 so in the remaining 30 years of my life I want to continue my work as a motivational coach helping others to succeed. Last year I commenced a journey from Bluff to Cape Reinga calling on every business on state highway one and promoting every town along SH1 and I intend to continue on that journey after the elections and the South Island Masters Games in which I am competing. During an election campaign I always endevour to attend the meetings of other candidates and listen to their ideas and this time I ‘m hoping some will walk their talk with me and listen to mine.
