Timaru Aquatic Centre Supporters Fail to Walk their Talk

Timaru Candidates Speeches are Boring
With all due respects to all the candidates in this article I would like to give them some advice. If you ever intend to embark on a political career then you should first take some lessons on how to give a speech. All the great leaders the world has ever known have been great spech makers. In the meetings I have been to some people in the audiance have gone to sleep while candidates have been giving a speech. Thats because many of them use the same words but they have no action to back it up. Often it is not what you say but its your body language that gets their attention and if your body shows no enthusiasm your audiance will switch off.

Aquatic Centre
The main political  issue in recent years has been the building of a $23.5 million Aquatic Centre on Maori Park. I have always been against the amount of money that the elected representatives have chosen to spend on a recreational sport that will never be used by the majority of ratepayers.  I could never understand what motivates those responsible to want to build such a complex and I got my answer when I challenged them to come for a swim in the Century Pool. This is an historic pool that the council have elected close down. I invited them to join me for a swim in the pool and then to walk with me the length of the City while I share positive ideas that if put into practice all the things they preached about in their election campaigning would happen.

Apathy
If the voting public are apathetic then its because the candidates they are being asked to vote for are apathetic.  Not one person turned up for a swim with me on Sunday afternoon and most of them did not even have the courtesy to even reply to my invitation. I have come to the conclusion that the Mayor and her councillors and their Aquatic Centre supporters can’t or don’t swim and the reason they are wasting ratepayers money on a facility we don’t need is because they want to build a monument to themselves.

Save the Century Pool
Century Pool Hydo Slide
On Sunday at the pool I asked several people if they were in favour of the Century pool closing and 100% said no they wanted the Century pool to stay open. The Timaru District Council are dictating their terms without any consultation with those of us who use the pools and pay their wages. The time has come for us to stand up to the bullies and dictators which is why I have decided to lead a campaign to Save the Century Pool. I’m now looking for people to form a committee and give me a hand.
