At the South end of Timaru in New Zealand are some families who live in poverty. The children are lucky because they have a public swimming pool which they an easily walk to from their school or from their home and back. Unfortunately the children are about to lose their favourite swimming pool because the local government have decided to close their favourite swimming pool down. The pool is to be replaced by a bigger flasher one at the Northern end of town in an area which is far and too dangerous for young children to walk because it cuts across the main highway. There is a new shopping mall soon to be built near new the new aquatic centre and it is estimated there will be up to 40,000 vehicles a day traveling on State Highway One. Pedestrian traffic for children will be far to dangerous because in places some footpaths leading to the new complex are just 1 metre wide and some roads do not even have pedestrian crossings.
Childrens lives will be in danger.
Walking to the new pool will not be an option for the children at the southern end of the city. It is important that all children learn to swim for survival in the water and if the Century Pool closes the parents at the South end of Timaru will not be able to afford to transport their children to the more expensive swimming pool at the northern end of the City. The children will just not go swimming and will never learn to swim.

The Century Pool is handy to a public hospital and we could use it as a physio pool for the hospitals patients.
