Like all newspapers the Timaru Herald is not interested in solutions to community problems they areonly interested in promoting the negatives in the world in which we live.
Example : The headline in the Timaru Herald today 23 July 2011.
Playcentre cash fears , Cuts could see centres close
The article is true some playcentres may close because of a cut back in Government funding. While it is important that newspapers keep us all informed of what is hapening in the world they all also have a moral obligation to report on positive ideas that can assist in providing some of the solution’s but my experience is that the Timaru Herald is failing in its duty to do that.
A positive solution
I am currently writing children’s books about animals. I am personalising the books for each child and giving them to the families for free. All the books contain photos of local animals and each animal talks to the children through the pages of the books. The idea is that over the years the children will be able to look back on what their life was like during their early childhood years. To fund the idea I have floated a public appeal and two companies have donated me several thousand promotional flyer’s which I now have to individually distribute by hand.
Child Victims
66 children lost a parent in the Christchurch earthquake. I tried to raise money so I could give them one of my animal books but the New Zealand News mededia were not interested
I have found a little 2 year old boy named Jett who fled Christchurch with his Mum and step dad and they are now living in the Southend of Timaru
I have taken a photo of Jett and his wee kitten and I am going to take a photo of his new puppy dog when it arrives in a few weeks time. I have also chosen another Southend family to give a free book to. They have 4 children up to 5 years of age plus a pussy cat and a rabbit. Photos of their family pets and them playing together will be published in the books and will become part of each child’s life
More Kicks in the Guts
To give my 70 year old legs a rest I thought I might be able to find a staff member in the editorial department of the Timaru Herald that had children themselves and who may be sympathetic to the plight of other peoples children and my idea.
I called on the Timaru Herald and asked to see a reporter and was surprised and upset when not one reporter at the Timaru Herald could be bothered interviewing me about the work I was doing to help with early childhood education in Timaru. Sorry legs keep walking.
Off the Rail
My next call was to the Off The Rail Cafe which is in the old Timaru Railway Station.
I took along my animal promotional flyers in the hope that the owner woud allow me to leave some of the free copies for their customers. I had enjoyed a cup of coffee in the cafe the week before and had since forgiven the cook for the burnt bum on my muffin.
I now need counselling because I cannot forgive them for telling me that that my flyer’s promoting children’s animal books were not welcome in their cafe.
Short Poppies
Have you noticed that there are far more short poppies in the world then there are tall ones. I am very proud of the fact that I am a tall poppy myself because it means I get a better view of the world. However I feel sorry for short poppies who go around kicking tall poppies in the guts. They do it because it makes them feel more important given the fact that they have never had the courage to risk failure themselves.
Watch this Space
Have you ever wondered what would happen if all the newspapers in the world stop publishing their crap. The answer is nothing bring it on and watch this space
