Below the Belt
I have taken on some big challenges in my life time but to have a former employee use my personal health records to help her win a court case is by far the lowest of the low.
Abuse of Privacy
In New Zealand we have an act of parliament that prevents anyone from publicly disclosing personal information about another person its called The Privacy Act.
When I ran a business as a professional motivational coach I spent time with my staff teaching them self motivational skills. In one of the private sessions with a staff member I shared in confidence with her how I had experienced a mental illness as a result of accidentally shooting my brother when I was a teenager.
Little did I know at the time that this particular former staff member would later stand up in a public court room and announce to the world that I was suffering from a mental illness. Little did I know that the news of me having a mental illness would be published in the local newspaper and this could only ever happen in a New Zealand using the One Sided Law.
Mental Health
I am slowly getting used to the fact that my former employee will continue to spread the word that I am some sort of a nut case along with all the others in the world that have suffered from a mental illness. Below is a list of the more well known ones

Besides being famous these people have all experienced a mental illness
In addition to these famous people 1 in 5 New Zealanders will experience a mental illness in any given year. You don’t have to look far to find these people however mental illness is a very private and personal thing and the biggest hurdle to full recovery is the stigma and discrimination that is labeled on the person who has the illness.
Voluntary Disclosure:
These names have been taken from a publicly displayed health funding authority brochure published by the Mental Health Commission Wellington. If anyone has any good reason why any of these names should not be displayed on this blog then please advise the writer. All these people have volunteered to go public and admit they have experienced a mental illness in their life time.
Mental Health Stories Wanted
I started my book the one sided law by calling for stories from employers and I have now extened it to include stories from employees.
There is another group that is suffering from discrimination in the workforce so I now want to hear from anyone who has experienced discrimination over there mental health issues
Send us your story
Were you sacked?
Did you resign?
Were you forced to dismiss an employee
Were you descriminated against because of mental illness?
If its an employment story then send it to us and we will judge its public value
Remember we do not use names on our blog or in our book just stories
to help change the law.
We are not about judging people we about looking at the things that are wrong with the empoloyment law and trying to change them for the better
