State Highway 1 Stories

"You don稚 need to be rich and famous, you just need to have a story that is interesting for others to read."

Make a Public Donation to Honour our Senior Citizens

How could you resist not making a donation so that future generations may learn from the lives of these unsung heroes and pioneers?

Recording the living memories of the elderly and placing them on the Timaru Directory website for all the world to see is one of the greatest gifts we could ever give to honour our Senior Citizens. Most elderly people love to talk about their past because that is all they have left. I have interviewed a number of elderly people who have been delighted to share their life story with me and show me their photos of when they were young.

There are many hours of work that goes into gathering the information about these wonderful pioneers and unsung heroes and we believe if everyone gave a little we could build a library of interesting stories as told by our Senior Citizens. Many of the elderly no longer have control of their own finances and are not in a position to pay to have their story written which is why we are calling for public donations. You can see businesses and individuals who are already proud sponsors of our senior citizens here.

Read some of the extracts from the stories they have shared with us.

OUR JOURNEY THUS FAR

Doris Smith with her mother.

My name is Doris Gibson and I was born in our family home on Swamp Road Temuka. This is me with my mother Carolyn Prattley 102 years ago and I知 still alive today. I believe that what keeps me alive is my good sense of humour.

Bert Prattley.

I知 Bert Prattley and at age 92 I知 a younger brother of Doris Gibson. I was born in a gig on the way to the Geraldine hospital. My two loves in life have been my draft horses and my wife Molly who I have been married to for 66 years.

Dave Annett and Les Darling.

Hi I知 Dave Annett the good looking one on the left. My friend with me is the late Les Darling. We were mates at school and later both joined the Navy. We served our engineering apprenticeships together before starting our own engineering business Annett and Darling in Timaru. We became the biggest supplier of wool scour machinery in the world. I have retired now but our company is still successfully trading as Andar. Make a donation and you will be able to read about my life story and our business on this Timaru Directory website

Alexander (Sandy) Brown.

I知 Alexander Brown but everyone calls me Sandy. My job in the war was not to kill people but to patch up the wounded soldiers in the hospital to try and keep them alive. I never got a medal in the war but my wife Ivy and I won several prizes for the best garden in Timaru. I知 now 91 and still enjoying life.

Doris Smith.

I知 Doris Smith a farmers wife from Cannington. I知 91 now but my fondest memories as a child was riding in Dads new Hutmobile Tourer motorcar from Timaru to Milton. We would always put the hood down when we went through a town. I have more photos and stories to share with you about my life.

Maude O'Keefe.

I知 Maude O狸eefe from Temuka. I知 now 92 but I once cared for the elderly and I was also a caregiver for women while they had their babies. I hope my story will inspire young people.

Record History

This is a life time opportunity for you to continue telling your story as you remember it. Your life is far more important than any material possessions. Leave the world a legacy, a gift of your journey through life and we will record it as part of State Highway One history. Start writing your story today because it is far more important than your will.

Your story will firstly be placed here on the internet and it will join many other stories about the people who have lived, worked and played in Timaru, Ashburton, Oamaru, Temuka and along SH1 over the past 150 years.

Isabella Workman.

My name is Isabella Workman and I was one of 15 Children The reason for our big family is that the train from Mt Somers to Ashburton would always toot its horn at 2 am in the morning outside our house. It would wake my parents up and they could not get back to sleep. For 10 years I chain smoked 60 menthol cigarettes a day and today I知 98 years of age.

Ethel Harrison.

I知 Ethel Harrison and I知 a descendant of Joseph Crocome the first South Island Doctor. I知 now 97 but I once played hockey for Otago for 11 years.

Murray Prattley.

Hi I知 Murray Prattley from Temuka and this was my first trailer. When I grew up I made sheep and cattle yards that folded up and became their own trailer. Prattley stock yards are now being sold all around the world. You can read about my life痴 journey and my inventions online.

I知 Helen Davies second from the back and these are my 10 children with our pet dog Goldie. I知 a daughter of Cecil and Margaret Holgate who were the joint owners of Priest and Holgate who had the hardware store in the Royal Arcade in Timaru for many years. If you make a donation towards the stories from us senior citizens then I知 sure that the descendants of my large family tree will be pleased you did.
