Temuka is a quiet rural township with a population
of approximately 4000 people. It is situated along state highway
one just 10 minutes drive north of Timaru on the northern
side of the Opihi river. Temuka is most famous for its whitebait,
trout and salmon fishing. Just a few minutes drive from the
township is now one of the biggest dairy factories in the
world under the ownership of Fonterra.
Temuka is also the home of New Zealands biggest livestock
saleyards with some interesting farm animals. Temuka is only
a short distance from the birth place of other famous icons
such as Richard Pearse whom is believed by the locals to be
the first man to fly an aeroplane. Just South of Temuka is
also the birthplace of the world famous racehorse Phar Lap.
Temuka has some wonderful old buildings and the architecture
is worth seeing because they are all different and these are
just some of them. Every one of these buildings has a story
to tell and Photo News is hoping that some of the local people
living in Temuka can tell us some stories about these grand
old buildings of character. We recommend you visit Temuka
and take some time to check these interesting things out for
yourself.
