A word from SH1 Travellers Guide Ron E Bishop

Wainono B&B gets the
thumbs up from me
My job as a travellers guide is to find
things that will be of interest to
the business or holiday traveller.
Accommodation is the first thing the
traveller is looking for and often the
best places to stay are not visible from
the road. Wainono Homestead is one
of those places. Even though its on
State Highway One the homestead is
nestled behind a well established
garden of trees. These are some
landmarks that will help you find the
Wainono Homestead B & B.

Wainono Birdlife & Wetlands

Central South Island |
Wainono Homestead is a grand old family home built in 1910 by a well known local family
of pioneers, the Studholme family. The homestead is situated on State Highway One making
it a great stop over on your South Island tour.
There are 5 acres of house and garden
at the Wainono Homestead for you to
enjoy for the asking.
|
What sets the garden apart from others is
the Waituna stream that runs through the
garden. |

On the turnoff to Waimate you will find this kiosk which is full of interesting information
about the Waimate District. If you get lost ask the bloke under the cabbage tree; he is a native of the area and knows the homestead where the Studholme family used to live. |

They know how to grow fruit and veges at Wainono. I found this lot on SH1 just a few
hundred yards from the homestead. If you get lost ask the man who grows these crops. |

Sunset on the lake |
The Wainono Lagoon is just across the road from the Homestead and is well worth a visit
even if you are not a duck shooter or a fisherman.
Wainono Lagoon is a shallow lake in the southern Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. A number of rivers flow into the lagoon, including the Hook River from the north and the Waihao River from the south. Nearby settlements include Hook and Studholme, with the town of Waimate approximately eight kilometres west.
Although it is within metres of the Pacific Ocean, the Wainono Lagoon is fresh water and separated from the sea by a gravel berm. Tests have revealed that the level of the lagoon does not fluctuate with the tide and its level of salinity is low. Fresh water, however, seeps from the lagoon into the sea.
